Barramundi Heaven
Many call Darwin barramundi heaven as its landscape lends itself to the proliferation of the barramundi fish. During the run-off in the months of March to May, the floodplains drain into the main river. Barramundis line up at the mouth of feeder creeks that flow into the main river during run-off, passing through creek mouths where we get to catch them!
The abundant presence of barramundi can also be attributed to small fish, tadpoles/frogs, and crustaceans like prawns & cherabin (freshwater prawns) that are pushed downstream during run-off. They are fodder for the hungry barramundis that are waiting in the creek mouths. This makes barramundi fishing in Northern Territory an event in itself.
You can catch barramundi during run-off, dry season is a slower period (end of May to August), and build-up (September to November). You might even be the one to catch that metre barramundi this time around!
